BRILLIANT CUT

 

Brilliant Cut is a national and international prize winning vocal jazz quintet founded in September 2000 by its current music director, Dr. Human van Staden. This semi-professional group works under the auspices of the Free State University in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
Brilliant Cut focus on absolute musical integrity, sincerity and sheer auditory and visual pleasure to the audience giving any audience a unique and thrilling experience!

 

 


Highlights since its inception:

· Performance at the internationally acclaimed Green
  Dolphin Jazz Club (V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, 10&11
  October 2003)

· Performance with world renowned vocal jazz ensemble
   from the USA, Gold Company (South Africa, 2003)

· Performance with 7 time Grammy winner, Al Jarreau
  (Sandton Convention Centre, 2001).

· Performance with Grammy nominated vocal jazz
   educator, Dr. Stephen Zegree (2000 and 2003)

· Invitation to perform with World Youth Choir (South
   Africa, 2001)

· Invitation to perform with Mormon Tabernacle Choir (Salt
   Lake City, USA, 2004)

· Gold Medal at 10th International Competition for
   Christmas and Advent Music (Prague, 2000)

 

          

· National Winners of the distinguished Old Mutual Jazz Encounters Competition (2001)

· Frequent appearance on national television and radio shows such as KykNet, M-Net, SABC2, E-Tv, SAFM,
   Classic FM, Kaya FM and OFM

· Successful launch of debut CD Recording “Many other nights” (2002)

· Special Honorary colours awarded by the University of the Free State for international ambassadorship
  (2000 - 2003)

· First SA vocal ensemble to be invited to perform at the 33rd Tolosa Grand Prix Choral Contest (Spain) in
   November 2001. Numerous other invitations to international competitions in Denmark, Sweden, Italy and the USA.

 

 

 

Anrie Pienaar is our 1st soprano. She is currently busy with her masters in psychology and engaged to be married.

Elmarie Wiesner is our 2nd soprano. She is a minister in the Dutch reformed church, but also received the B. Mus degree. She is married to Lubbe Wiesner, a pharmocol. scientist.

Nadia Pretorius is our alto. She received her masters degree in media studies and lectures at the Free State University.

Elmarie Potgieter is currently our understudy for the girls and is busy with her studies in music.

 

Human van Staden is the founder and music director of Brilliant Cut. He is a qualified medical doctor busy with his internship.

Chris Nortier is our tenor. He is a farmer in a nearby town, Brandfort.

Rassie Bekker is our bass. He is busy with his studies in information technology.
